In this episode of The Source, we speak with world-renowned economist, senior UN advisor and best-selling author Jeffrey D. Sachs about recent developments in Ukraine and Gaza. We begin the interview by assessing the stalemate in the US Congress and the European Union on providing aid to Ukraine. We then talk about Israel's war in Gaza and ask about the significance of the recent United Nations resolutions and the US veto against them. We inquire about Israel's objective in Gaza as well as why the US continues to fully support it. We then discuss recent developments in civil liberties in relation to Israel and the Palestinian conflict in Germany and finally assess why the West selectively invokes international law.
ABOUT JEFFREY D. SACHS: Jeffrey D. Sachs is University Professor and Director of the Center for Sustainable Development at Columbia University, where he directed the Earth Institute from 2002 until 2016. He is President of the UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network, Co-Chair of the Council of Engineers for the Energy Transition, Commissioner of the UN Broadband Commission for Development, academician of the Pontifical Academy of Social Sciences at the Vatican, and Tan Sri Jeffrey Cheah Honorary Distinguished Professor at Sunway University. He has been Special Advisor to three United Nations Secretaries-General, and currently serves as an SDG Advocat under Secretary General António Guterres. He spent over twenty years as a professor at Harvard University, where he received his B.A., M.A., and Ph.D. degrees. Sachs has received 41 honorary doctorates, and his recent awards include the 2022 Tang Prize in Sustainable Development, the Legion of Honor by decree of the President of the Republic of France, and the Order of the Cross from the President of Estonia. His most recent books are The Ages of Globalization: Geography, Technology, and Institutions (2020) and Ethics in Action for Sustainable Development (2022).

In this episode of The Source, we talk to author and independent journalist Fabian Scheidler about the latest developments surrounding the Israeli war in Gaza. We begin the interview by talking about Fabian's recent trip to Israel and Palestine. Then we examine the Hamas terror attack on October 7th and Israel's response to it. We assess the credibility of the evidence presented by Israel of the Hamas command center under Al Shifa Hospital in Gaza. We examine the significance of the New York Times report that claims Israel knew about the Hamas attacks on October 7 more than a year ago. Finally, we take a look at developments in Germany in relation to the war in Gaza and discuss the latest updates on the war in Ukraine.
ABOUT FABIAN SCHEIDLER: Fabian Scheidler, born in 1968, studied history and philosophy at the Free University of Berlin and theater directing at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Frankfurt/M. Since 2001, he has worked as a freelance writer for print media, television, theater and opera. In 2009, he founded the independent television magazine Kontext TV with David Goeßmann. Otto Brenner Media Prize for critical journalism (2009). As a dramaturge and playwright, he worked for many years for the Grips Theater in Berlin. In 2013, his opera "Death of a Banker" (music: Andreas Kersting) premiered at the Gerhart Hauptmann Theater in Görlitz. In 2015, Fabian Scheidler's book "Das Ende der Megamaschine. In this episode of The Source, our senior editor Zain Raza returns to interview Lawrence Wilkerson, retired Army colonel and former chief of staff to Colin Powell, on the latest developments surrounding Gaza and Ukraine. We assess the Hamas attack on October 7th and Israel's response to it and whether it constitutes genocide. We examine Israel's objectives in Gaza and explore why the US continues to support it unconditionally. Finally, we assess why support for Ukraine is waning in the United States and whether Europe alone, led by Germany, can lead Ukraine to victory.
ABOUT LAWRENCE WILKERSON: Lawrence Wilkerson is currently a Senior Fellow at the Quincy Institute for Responsible Statecraft and formerly a Distinguished Adjunct Professor of Government and Public Policy at the College of Williams and Mary. Lawrence Wilkerson’s last positions in government were as Secretary of State Colin Powell’s Chief of Staff (2002-05), Associate Director of the State Department’s Policy Planning staff under the directorship of Ambassador Richard N. Haass, and member of that staff responsible for East Asia and the Pacific, political-military and legislative affairs (2001-02). Before serving at the State Department, Wilkerson served 31 years in the U.S. Army. During that time, he was a member of the faculty of the U.S. Naval War College (1987 to 1989), Special Assistant to General Powell when he was Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff (1989-93), and Director and Deputy Director of the U.S. Marine Corps War College at Quantico, Virginia (1993-97). Wilkerson retired from active service in 1997 as a colonel, and began work as an advisor to General Powell. He has also taught national security affairs in the Honors Program at the George Washington University. He is currently working on a book about the first George W. Bush administration.
