In this episode of The Source, we speak to journalist and international law and human rights lawyer Dimitri Lascaris about the latest developments surrounding Ukraine and Israel's war in Gaza. We begin the interview by inquiring about the recent incident between Russia and Ukraine, in which a Russian military plane with Ukrainian prisoners of war on board was shot down in Russia. We then examine Ukrainian President Zelenskyy's peace plan, which he recently presented at the World Economic Forum in Davos, and analyze whether it can bring a realistic end to the war. We assess in detail Israel's progress in Gaza since the start of the war and the case brought by South Africa against Israel for genocide at the International Court of Justice. In this episode of The Source, we interview independent journalist and economist Dr. Shir Hever on the latest developments surrounding Israel's war in Gaza. We begin the interview by examining an investigative article published by the independent magazine +972, which reveals based on Israeli military sources how Israel is using artifical intelligence to bomb Gaza. We then discuss Israel's objectives in Gaza after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu declared his intention to expel the Palestinians from there. We also assess the significance of the "watered down" resolution passed by the United Nations Security Council on December 23, 2023. We inquire about the risk of a regional war after Israel assassinated a high-ranking Iranian general in Syria. Finally, we look at the laws being introduced in Germany to ban certain speech around the Israel-Palestine issue and the impact they have on civil liberties.

In this episode of The Source, we speak to journalist and international law and human rights lawyer Dimitri Lascaris about recent developments in Gaza and Ukraine. We begin the interview by examining Ukrainian President Zelenskyy's recent announcement to mobilize 500,000 people for the military and whether this is realistic to achieve. We then examine the question of why the German government is planning budget cuts in key areas of the economy while avoiding cuts to the military. Next, we discuss Israel's war in Gaza, specifically analyzing the actions of the Houthi militia, which has been seizing commercial ships destined for Israel in the Red Sea, and whether or not this constitutes terrorism. We also examine the new US policy of restricting entry to extremist Israeli settlers who carry out violence against Palestinians, and ask whether this policy will have a significant impact. Finally, we discuss the new laws being introduced in Germany on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, which prohibit certain speech, and their implications for civil liberties.

ABOUT JEFFREY D. SACHS: Jeffrey D. Sachs is University Professor and Director of the Center for Sustainable Development at Columbia University, where he directed the Earth Institute from 2002 until 2016. He is President of the UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network, Co-Chair of the Council of Engineers for the Energy Transition, Commissioner of the UN Broadband Commission for Development, academician of the Pontifical Academy of Social Sciences at the Vatican, and Tan Sri Jeffrey Cheah Honorary Distinguished Professor at Sunway University. He has been Special Advisor to three United Nations Secretaries-General, and currently serves as an SDG Advocat under Secretary General António Guterres. He spent over twenty years as a professor at Harvard University, where he received his B.A., M.A., and Ph.D. degrees. Sachs has received 41 honorary doctorates, and his recent awards include the 2022 Tang Prize in Sustainable Development, the Legion of Honor by decree of the President of the Republic of France, and the Order of the Cross from the President of Estonia. His most recent books are The Ages of Globalization: Geography, Technology, and Institutions (2020) and Ethics in Action for Sustainable Development (2022).
