We inquire about concrete steps the Israeli government can take to end the Hamas hostage crisis. Finally, we discuss the war in Ukraine and how to end it, and whether Germany can once again become an economic power while continuing to sanction Russia and import American liquefied natural gas (LNG).

In this episode of The Source, we speak with independent journalist, author and economist Dr. Shir Hever about the current conflict between Israel and Palestine. First, we inquire about who was behind the attacks on the al-Ahli Arab hospital that killed 500 Palestinian civilians seeking refuge. Then we discuss the situation in Gaza and whether Israel's actions constitute genocide and collective punishment. We examine the role of the West and whether it has played a constructive or destructive role in this conflict. We assess why the Israeli military has not yet launched a ground invasion of Gaza and whether this move could trigger a regional war. Finally, we assess the significance of NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden's Oct. 7 tweet about the failure of the Israeli government under Benjamin Netanyahu to prevent this attack, despite exporting cutting-edge spying and surveillance technologies to despots around the world.
ABOUT DR. SHIR HEVER: Dr. Shir Hever is an independent economic researcher and journalist. He writes articles and research for various venues and gives lectures in political and academic venues. He is the author of The Privatisation of Israeli Security (Pluto, 2017) and The Political Economy of Israel’s Occupation (Pluto, 2010). In this episode of The Source, we speak with journalist and international law and human rights lawyer Dimitri Lascaris about recent developments in the conflict between Israel and Palestine. We begin with an assessment of Hamas' attack on Israel on October 7, 2023, and evaluate Israel's response so far. We then assess the humanitarian situation in the southern Gaza Strip, where 1.1 million Palestinians have been forced to flee by Israel. We also examine the reasons why Israeli intelligence was unable to detect the attack by Hamas, despite being warned by Egyptian intelligence days in advance. We inquire whether Israel's policies, which Human Rights Watch and Amnesty International call apartheid and occupation, are responsible for the recurring violence in the region. Finally, we ask why the West invokes international law and sanctions when Russia annexes Ukrainian territory, but does not apply the same standard when Israel annexes Palestinian territory.
ABOUT DIMITRI LASCARIS: Dimitri Lascaris is a journalist and lawyer. As a lawyer, he specializes in class action litigation, international law and human rights. He was a member of the shadow cabinets of the Green Parties of Canada and Quebec. In 2020, he ran for the leadership of the Green Party of Canada and came in second.

This is a compilation of interviews we conducted with Noam Chomsky, Chris Hedges, and Shir Hever prior to the outbreak of conflict in Palestine and Israel on October 7, 2023. His work has influenced a wide range of domains, including artificial intelligence, cognitive science, computer science, logic, mathematics, music theory and analysis, psychology and immunology. ABOUT CHRIS HEDGES: Chris Hedges is a Pulitzer Prize–winning journalist who was a foreign correspondent for 15 years for The New York Times, where he served as the Middle East bureau chief and Balkan bureau chief for the paper. In this episode of The Source, we talk with independent journalist, author and economist Dr. Shir Hever about the current conflict between Israel and Palestine and how it came to be. We then examine the role of decades of Israeli occupation and apartheid and whether it is related to the current escalation of violence. We assess the role of the Western media before the conflict erupted and ask whether they reported with the same frequency and quality when Israel was committing crimes against humanity against Palestinians. We also talk about the international law that Western politicians invoke when it comes to Ukraine, for example, and whether the same standard applies to Palestine, where Israel has not only acted as an occupying power since 1967, but also continues to drive local populations off their land in order to build new settlements on it. Finally, we discuss what approach the international community can take today to achieve a lasting and sustainable peace between Israel and Palestine.
